Aurifil Companion Thread Set - Prairie Fields
I'm so happy to introduce the Prairie Fields companion thread set, my first curated thread set with Aurifil! Each of these beautiful spools was selected by me to inspire you to explore and have fun with your quilting. Whether you're gearing up to quilt your first quilt, learning a new technique (free motion quilting novice over here!!) or consider yourself a quilting aficionado, I hope these threads can play a role in transforming your quilt into something you're proud to say “I made that!!”
Let me walk you through the set, starting with the colours.
Aurifil 4030 in 50 wt.
Burgundy has been one of my favourite colours for years. It’s rich, it’s lush, it gives decadent dark chocolate raspberry cake.
Aurifil 6728 in 40 wt.
This spool was an unexpected surprise, and I now refer to it as my chameleon thread. It’s not quite red, not quite orange, and its perceived colour morphs depending on the fabric it’s layered on.
Aurifil 2210 in 28 wt.
This felt like my safest colour choice, which meant it got the punchiest weight! Golden like a field full of wheat, this thread will draw eyes to your quilting.
Aurifil 2515 in 50 wt.
Imagine walking through a field left to grow wild. It might take a few steps, but suddenly you notice little flowers growing among the tall grass. This thread is that pop of colour in the set.
Aurifil 2887 in 50 wt.
What prairie field is complete without a green to represent all the plants and foliage?
Next let's talk spool size. I purposefully chose large spools over small spools because I want you to feel like the sky's the limit when it comes to your quilting design (and prairie skies are pretty expansive!). You want to use the same thread colour for your top and bottom threads or quilt super dense or quilt a queen size quilt?! The large spool has you covered with enough thread to get your project done.
Thread weight is such a fun element to experiment with, especially as you get more comfortable with quilting. These are my thoughts on how to use different weights.
- 50 wt (orange spool) - this is your work horse. It’s great for piecing, works well in the bobbin with heavier threads, and is the Supporting Actor to the star of the show, your quilt top.
- 40 wt (green spool) - she’s cute, she’s capable, she gives 110%. I like using this thread when I want my quilting to be more visible without overpowering.
- 28 wt (grey spool) - use this when you want to make a statement because this thread brings the drama! I like using 28 wt with a contrasting fabric colour to really draw focus to the quilt lines.
